Vanessa Tonarelli, guida turistica e curatrice della rubrica biocaffeinata Art with a view – arte libera tutti!, ha incontrato, durante uno dei suoi tour fiorentini, JOAN MATEY – artista statunitense poliedrica che, tramite l’uso di materiali vari, sa creare installazioni estremamente potenti e originali – quasi delle scenografie in miniatura.

Vanessa ha pensato di intervistarla per noi, per permetterci di scoprire questo tipo di arte sperimentale impegnata che ha come scopo principale, per Joan, quello di creare una “emotional connection” – una connessione emotiva, tra chi crea, e chi osserva.

Fin dall’infanzia, Joan ha usato l’espressione artistica come antidoto alla crudezza della realtà. Da qui, poi, la scelta di trasmettere, con la sua arte, tematiche “impegnate” – come la salute mentale o le problematiche ambientali. Un processo, quello di creazione artistica, che alla fine si rivela, per Joan stessa, quasi terapeutico.

Ma non svelo oltre: lascio che siano le domande di Vanessa e le risposte di Joan a farci scoprire – e godere – questa specialissima artista e la sua arte.

Life as an artist. Was it clear from an early age or did this passion come later?

Una vita da artista. Era chiaro fin da piccola o questa passione è venuta dopo?

I was compelled to draw at an early age. I escaped into my own world as I needed to comfort myself from the misbehavior of my parents who did not get along with each other.  If they were arguing, I could happily spend hours drawing or making little villages out of clay with very detailed scenes. That creativity and manifestation of my personal ideas helped me to not feel powerless.

Sono stata costretta a disegnare dalla tenera età. Fuggivo nel mio mondo perché avevo bisogno di consolarmi dal comportamento dei miei genitori che non andavano d’accordo.  Se loro litigavano, io potevo felicemente passare ore a disegnare o a fare piccoli villaggi di argilla con scene molto dettagliate. Questa creatività e la manifestazione delle mie idee personali mi aiutavano a non sentirmi impotente. 

I recall a positive response from my father… when I was about 9 years old, I came to him crying that maybe when I grew up I wouldn’t want to be an artist any more and instead I would become a secretary (which I really did not want to be).

He told me that what ever I wanted strongly enough is what I would become. He was right – if DESIRE is strong enough – it will motivate us 

Mio padre mi disse che quello che volevo abbastanza fortemente è quello che sarei diventata. Aveva ragione – se il DESIDERIO è abbastanza forte – ci motiverà.

 …and can push against any obstacle to express itself. Needless to say, I never became a secretary, although I did wait tables… while in art school! And I have earned a living making art in one form or another for my entire life.  Illustration, advertising graphics, prop making, toys… and my personal original creations of paintings, drawings and dioramas.

Where does your inspiration come from? Who are your favorite artists? Why?

Da dove viene la tua ispirazione? Chi sono i tuoi artisti preferiti? Perché?

Sometimes I have no idea why certain artistic ideas enter my head. I developed a very strong imagination as a child. I see beautiful images and I have to write them down immediately when I wake up.

A volte non ho idea del perché certe idee artistiche mi entrino nella testa. Ho sviluppato un’immaginazione molto forte da bambina. Vedo delle belle immagini e devo scriverle immediatamente quando torno in me.

Often I know I will never do justice to the incredible visual in my mind’s eye. Maybe those images are reserved for a descriptive narrative where I can hope to verbally paint what I see, so that someone else can feel the awe that I felt.
That’s usually what my art is about – getting someone to see a perspective that I see, maybe something they were not allowing themselves to feel. I do find it odd that many of my art pieces that deal with very intense issues, start out with only some visual comparison of an object to something else… and the concept grows through that observation. A good example of this is discussed on my YOU TUBE video “Bye-bye Bi-polar Bears.”

Questo è di solito ciò di cui si occupa la mia arte – far sì che qualcuno veda una prospettiva che io vedo, forse qualcosa che non si lasciato sentire. Trovo strano che molte delle mie opere d’arte che trattano temi molto intensi, inizino tramite un confronto visivo tra oggetti diversi….. e che il concetto cresca attraverso quell’osservazione. Un buon esempio di questo è discusso nel mio video YOU TUBE “Bye-bye Bi-polar Bears”.

Squirrels got into my storage shed and chewed a big hole in a sheet of thick Styrofoam and their tiny teeth carved marks that looked to me like the Artic tundra. Just making that association and staring at it brought on the visuals of polar bears and then, what if they were BI polar bears ? I honestly don’t know why my brain operates like that. Then real life circumstances may dictate the direction, as did the death of a family member who suffered from being bi-polar. Then my art piece developed meaning, closure and a sense of purpose. As far as how to artistically depict these kind of important issues, I am inspired by any artist who manages to perfectly capture an emotional moment in time. Edward Hopper, Vermeer, Munch, Frida Kahlo, Annie Liebowitz, are a few.

Per quanto riguarda il modo di rappresentare artisticamente questo tipo di temi importanti, sono ispirata da qualsiasi artista che riesca a catturare perfettamente un momento emotivo nel tempo. Edward Hopper, Vermeer, Munch, Frida Kahlo, Annie Liebowitz, sono solo alcuni.

Human behavior is probably my greatest influence… irony, injustice, hypocrisy, camaraderie, awareness, blindness….

Il comportamento umano è forse l’influenza più grande per me.

Tell us about the festival, how did the idea come about?

Parlaci del Festival, come è nata l’idea?

I have developed two festivals in the area where I live. One is called Lantern Fest for the Crooked River Lighthouse in the small town of Carrabelle. I developed the Keeper’s House Museum there and the house and tower were built in 1895. It was an era when lanterns were used, as electricity had not reached our remote coastal area and the lighthouse itself held a large glass lantern, a 4th order Fresnel lens. So I envisioned a birthday celebration where, instead of candles, we hung beautiful lanterns to represent each year of the lighthouse’s age.  

Ho sviluppato due festival nella zona in cui vivo. Uno si chiama Lantern Fest per il Crooked River Lighthouse nella piccola città di Carrabelle. Ho sviluppato il Keeper’s House Museum lì, la casa e la torre sono state costruite nel 1895. Era un’epoca in cui si usavano le lanterne, dato che l’elettricità non aveva raggiunto la nostra remota area costiera e il faro stesso aveva una grande lanterna di vetro, una lente di Fresnel del 4° ordine. Così ho immaginato una festa di compleanno in cui, invece di candele, abbiamo appeso bellissime lanterne per rappresentare ogni anno dell’età del faro.

Our festival has been a successful event with outdoor theater, art, music and dance for a dozen years, but is now on stand by due to Covid precautions.
Our small town’s annual festival was in need of some fun pageantry so I created a performance called the Fishy Fashion Show©.

Il festival annuale della nostra piccola città aveva bisogno di qualche spettacolo divertente, così ho creato una performance chiamata il Fishy Fashion Show©.
I was inspired by a Seattle artist who created a fashion show with outfits made of discarded food packaging and assorted plastics. I decided to construct clothing using anything one might find on the shoreline, from sea sponges to fishing nets, shells, sponges, torn up boat sails and broken beach umbrellas.

Sono stata ispirata da un artista di Seattle che ha creato una sfilata di moda con abiti fatti di imballaggi alimentari scartati e plastica assortita. Ho deciso di costruire abiti usando qualsiasi cosa si possa trovare sulla costa, dalle spugne di mare alle reti da pesca, conchiglie, spugne, vele di barche strappate e ombrelloni rotti.

Along with humorous narration, different characters have developed from the costumes, such as the Red Tide She Devil- which gives the opportunity to tell the audience how we might solve some of our pressing environmental issues. Mostly my intent is just to be silly! Each year different models are selected to dress as the lovely and often crazy characters, who are in real life, familiar characters in our community

Ogni anno vengono selezionati modelli diversi per vestire i panni di personaggi adorabili e spesso pazzi, che nella vita reale sono personaggi noti nella nostra comunità.

… like our sheriff, our bank tellers, shop owners and commissioners who all enjoy being part of the show. I create two new outfits annually and have over two dozen fun personas, the Legionnaire de Mer, the Bayside Bride and the Maritime Marshall. 

What do you like about Italy? and about Florence?

Cosa ti piace dell’Italia? E di Firenze?

I have not been to all of Italy but from what I have seen, I am overwhelmed by the immense beauty!…no wonder there were so many painters and sculptors here!

Non sono stata in tutta l’Italia, ma da quello che ho visto, sono sopraffatta dall’immensa bellezza!…non c’è da stupirsi che ci fossero così tanti pittori e scultori qui!

The way they built the ancient cities makes them so full of fantastic angles and perspectives and exquisite shadows and lighting. It is truly a visual paradise. Florence is a wonderful city, so clean and easy to get around in…(great TOUR GUIDES!) The city is so privileged to hold the most astounding original art works from so many great masters. People are genuinely helpful and sincere.

Firenze è una città meravigliosa, così pulita e facile da girare…(ottime guide turistiche!). La città ha il privilegio di possedere le più stupefacenti opere d’arte originali di così tanti grandi maestri. La gente è veramente disponibile e sincera.

I also cannot believe how EVERY meal we had was served with the utmost respect and quality presentation, and of course exquisitely delicious! How do you make food that keeps bringing different flavors into your mouth the more you chew it ?! I cannot wait to return!
